Sussex County ASA Water Polo

Under 14 (2006 & younger) Inter County Tournament
Whitgift School
Sunday 22nd September 2019

Sussex ASA entered the annual inter county tournament for the under 14 age group which was played as in previous years at the excellent deep-water pool at Whitgift school in South Croydon.
The competition was played on a “round robin” basis and along with Sussex, Surrey, Middlesex and Kent had entered.

The Sussex squad selected was as follows; –

  1. Felix Monaghan (G/K)
  2. Henry Broadhurst
  3. Joe Boot
  4. Ethan Foxwell
  5. Archie Moon
  6. Luke Heaton
  7. Lillie Standen
  8. Keira Byford
  9. Max Cooper
  10. Maty Skoda
  11. Ethan Lecuyer
  12. Bella Power

Individual match reports:

Sussex 7, Surrey 3 (H-T 2-0)

A good start to the tournament saw the Sussex youngsters record a relatively comfortable win against a spirited opposition.
We struggled early on to impose our tactical plan but in the second half we took control and as a result scored a number of good goals.
The team at one point led 6-0 but some disappointing defending allowed Surrey to score three times late on but the result was never in doubt.

Scorers; – Henry 3, Max 2, Ethan L 1.
Exclusions; – Lillie

Sussex 5, Kent 6 (H-T 3-2)

A hugely exciting game where the squad put in a terrific performance against a very strong Kent team.
We made an excellent start and although Felix made a couple of good saves, Henry scored twice to give the team a much-deserved lead.
In the second half we began to tire and Kent led 6-3 with time running out but we staged an excellent recovery and came remarkably close to snatching a draw.
Overall it was slightly disappointing to lose such a close match but the squad put in a terrific performance and just missed out on a positive result.

Scorers; – Henry 4, Lillie 1
Exclusions; – Henry 2, Max, Lillie

Sussex 10, Middlesex 8 (H-T 3-2

This was another good performance and we probably should have won the game by a slightly larger margin but we were guilty on occasions of some poor defending which cost us a number of goals.
The speed of our counter attack always caused Middlesex problems and we probably should have scored more goals but this was a good all-round performance to end the event.

Scorers; – Henry 5, Archie 1, Lillie 1, Felix 1, Max 1, Maty 1.
Exclusions; – Archie 1, Henry 1.

L-R, Lillie, Ethan F, Henry, Felix, Bella, Luke, Joe, Archie, Keira, Max, Ethan L & Maty

Overall this was a very encouraging tournament for the young Sussex team and on another day with a little more luck we might have won.
It was certainly no disgrace to finish second to a good Kent team and I hope that all of the squad will have benefited from playing in this event.
